Supported adapters and CAN-FD compatibility
FCA PROXI Tool connects to the vehicle over standard interfaces — an ELM327-compatible adapter or a J2534 PassThru device. Here is what works, what you need for CAN-FD, and which adapter to buy.

ELM327-compatible adapters
OBDLink EX (USB) and vLinker MC+ (Bluetooth) are reliable, widely available choices. ELS27 / STN2120 are supported, with an ELS27 mode toggle next to the adapter selector. Generic ELM clones can work but quality varies — a known-good adapter saves time on reads and writes.
J2534 PassThru
For professional interfaces the tool supports VXDIAG, MongoosePro, Scanmatik, Tactrix OpenPort and FDRS — a good fit for shops that already own a PassThru device and want one cable for everything.
CAN-FD — which platforms need it
Newer vehicles put some modules on a CAN-FD bus, which a classic adapter cannot reach. To read and write those modules you need an FD-capable adapter/driver — for example the FDRS driver profile for VXDIAG. CAN-FD matters on RAM 1500 DT (2025), Jeep Grand Cherokee WL, and the Wagoneer / Wagoneer S family. The module topology view shows which modules are FD before you try.
Connection speed
Minimum serial speed is 38400 (the old 9600 fallback was removed for reliability), and the tool auto-detects connection baud up to 2,000,000 — so a capable adapter runs at full speed without manual tuning.
Which adapter should I buy?
- Most users / best value: OBDLink EX (USB) or vLinker MC+ (Bluetooth).
- CAN-FD vehicles (RAM DT 2025, newer modules): an FD-capable J2534 such as VXDIAG with the FDRS profile.
- Already own a PassThru: use it — VXDIAG, Tactrix, Scanmatik and MongoosePro are supported.

FAQ
Does a cheap ELM327 clone work?
It can, but quality varies and a poor clone causes failed reads and writes. A known-good adapter such as OBDLink EX or vLinker MC+ is worth it.
How do I know if my vehicle needs CAN-FD?
If a module sits on a CAN-FD bus you need an FD-capable adapter to reach it. The topology view flags FD modules; RAM 1500 DT 2025 and several newer platforms need it.
